A National Spotlight on Rural Broadband- and Why It Matters

There are moments when the everyday work of an industry is recognized for what it truly is: foundational to the country’s future. Being selected to represent the broadband industry in the upcoming America 250 documentary series is one of those moments- and for Nex-Tech, it’s both an honor and an opportunity to tell a story that’s long overdue for the national stage.

Fewer than 30 organizations across the United States were chosen to represent the industries shaping America. Nex-Tech will stand for rural broadband providers, helping tell the story of how connectivity has evolved from party lines to fiber and beyond. That alone signals something important: rural providers are no longer operating in the background. They are central to how communities grow, compete, and stay connected.

As the project has taken shape, one challenge has stood out. Distilling 75 years of progress into just eight minutes forces clarity. It pushes you to define not just what you’ve built, but why it matters. Nex-Tech’s story began as a cooperative in the Lenora area, rooted in a commitment to serve. What has sustained that legacy is a forward-looking mindset- continually investing in what communities need next, not just what works today.

That mindset applies just as much to how the industry communicates as it does to how it builds networks. Here’s the tension: many rural broadband providers are doing innovative, high-impact work, but they’re still talking about it in outdated ways. The gap between what’s being delivered and how it’s being positioned is wider than it should be – and it limits growth, perception, and long-term competitiveness.

This documentary highlights what’s possible when that story is told clearly. Broadband is no longer just infrastructure. It’s economic development, healthcare access, education, and opportunity. Rural providers have been driving that impact for decades, often without recognition. Now that the spotlight is here, it’s worth asking whether the industry is ready to fully step into it.

Behind the scenes, this project has been just as meaningful as the final product will be. Working alongside a production team to shape this story- and welcoming a film crew on-site to capture conversations with leadership – has been a reminder that the details matter. Every decision, every message, every example contributes to how the story is understood.

As the documentary coincides with the July 4th celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, there’s a real sense of pride in what this moment represents. It’s a chance to showcase the role rural broadband providers play in keeping communities connected and moving forward.

Now that the feature has officially been published on USA TODAY, that excitement becomes something we get to share. We’re proud to represent the broadband industry on a national stage, and even more proud to represent the many rural providers who have built, adapted, and invested alongside us. This recognition belongs to the entire industry.

We’re also excited to give a closer look at how it all came together. Check that out here!
