My First Week at Nex-Tech
Written by: Oscar Busch
Hello, my name is Oscar Busch, and I am a student at Hays High School. I am involved in the JAG-K program, which stands for Jobs for America’s Graduates. In Jag-K, we engage with the community and employers, provide community service, and gain new experiences so we are ready to enter the workforce.
My first few days at Nex-Tech were an entirely new experience. Learning that I would be working in the Community Engagement department was exciting and motivating, as it offered me an opportunity to work in a professional environment.
From the beginning, the team made me feel welcomed and supported, which helped with any anxiety and stress that I had. On my first day, I was introduced to the expectations of a formal workplace setting, something new to me but not entirely unfamiliar. I had an interview with Friday Otuya, the Community Engagement Specialist, and during our conversation we got to know each other on a personal level. The conversation was engaging and lasted a little over an hour, but it felt much shorter due to the relaxed and open nature of it. I appreciated how the company created a space for me to feel comfortable and accepted, and it gave me a sense that Nex-Tech values people as much as skills.
As a start to my internship, I was assigned a few tasks to help expand my knowledge of Nex-Tech and the various areas in which we are involved. For my first assignment, I went over to the Nex-Tech website and read about the many different areas of coverage that is offered, learning about our Scholarships, Community Engagement, and Nex-Tech Premium Wi-Fi.
Not only does Nex-Tech give customers access to the best internet, it also provides children with the opportunity to get scholarships. Nex-Tech has three separate scholarships for students in the community to apply for. Also, Nex-Tech is actively engaging in the community to better understand, and work with the feedback the company receives.
Furthermore, as part of Nex-Tech’s community engagement efforts, they try to make connections with decision-makers, often in government. Bringing light to frequently asked questions adds an extra level of understanding of why certain things are done in a specific way.
In addition, Nex-Tech offers premium Wi-Fi. Premium Wi-Fi allows additional access points to be installed in your home, alleviating the need to create a new network and expanding the Wi-Fi you already have.
What I really appreciated the most was the level of organization and support across the entire Nex-Tech team. Everyone I interacted with was helpful and encouraging, making the onboarding process smooth and enjoyable. Nex-Tech has shown me that it’s a company that values its people and invests in their success, and I’m excited to continue learning and contributing as part of this team.
I am looking forward to my experience working with Nex-Tech.

Friday Otuya
Community Engagement Specialist
I'm Friday Otuya /Oh-Too-Yah/. I love sharing development resources, working on initiatives that change lives, and building bridges that lead to prosperity.
Specifically, I originate, underwrite, and deploy capital to small businesses that typically don't fit bank credit criteria. These businesses create jobs and expand economic opportunity in Nex-Tech's service area. I also support Nex-Tech's community and legislative strategy toward making life better through technology.
Before this, I worked in broadcast journalism and corporate communications, and did development finance work across Africa and the U.S.
If you are curious how Nex-Tech can partner with you through loans, grants, donations, or another kind of capital investment, I'd love to chat.
I live with my wife and two lads in Hays, KS.
