Mengyao (Nikki) Li is an international student from China currently pursuing a Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Information Assurance Management at Fort Hays State University. Previously, she studied Digital Marketing, and her undergraduate degree is in Architecture. This summer, she is serving as a Nex-Generation Round Up for Youth Intern at Nex-Tech. She writes about her experience at the Kirwin Ribbon-Cutting and Fiber Showcase 2026.

On June 18, I had the opportunity to support the Kirwin Ribbon-Cutting and Fiber Showcase with Friday Otuya, as part of my internship at Nex-Tech. Since Nex-Tech hosted the event, our team was involved in helping prepare and support activities throughout the day. It was truly a meaningful and unforgettable experience.

Driving into Kirwin felt almost surreal. The quiet roads, beautiful scenery, and peaceful atmosphere reminded me of the small towns I used to see in animated movies when I was growing up in China. Seeing community members, partners, and leaders gather together to celebrate expanded broadband access made the day even more special.

We prepared for the event by setting up signs, organizing materials, arranging tables, and making sure everything was ready before guests arrived. Later, while LeighAnne and I were walking to the car to get additional supplies, we unexpectedly met Bill Abston, KOBD Director, and Tom[NC1.1] in the parking lot. They had arrived very early for the event, which impressed me. Even though it was my first time meeting them, they were kind and took the time to say hello.

One of the biggest highlights of the day was finally meeting Jimmy Todd, Nex-Tech’s CEO and General Manager. Interestingly, I did not realize who he was at first. While I was helping with photography and assisting guests, I noticed a gentleman in a red shirt standing behind me. I even invited him to sit in the front row, but he politely chose to stay where he was. Later, when someone announced that Jimmy Todd would be speaking, I suddenly realized that the person standing behind me the whole time was Nex-Tech’s CEO! I was honestly surprised, and looking back, I still think it was a pretty funny moment.

Throughout the event, I also had the opportunity to meet many colleagues and partners, as well as several other members of the Nex-Tech team. Everyone was welcoming, supportive, and willing to share their experiences, which made me feel even more connected to the Nex-Tech family.

As an international student from China, experiences like this continue to teach me valuable lessons. Camp Hansen is a beautiful place, and being able to support such a meaningful event made me appreciate even more how broadband can positively impact rural communities.

Looking back on the day, I realized that growth often begins when we take one step forward. Whether taking photos, learning new skills, or meeting new people, sometimes we simply need to move a little closer, ask questions, and be willing to start conversations.
