Nex-Tech Makes Rural Kansas Better

A personal journey learning how technology supports rural Kansas

Before starting my internship at Nex-Tech, I had a general understanding of the company as a telecommunications provider. As a graduate student studying Information Management in the United States, I knew Nex-Tech provided fiber internet, Wi-Fi, and phone services that connect communities across Kansas. In my courses, I studied topics such as information systems, cybersecurity, and how technology supports organizations. However, my internship gave me the opportunity to move beyond classroom concepts and see how technology creates real impact in communities.

Every week at Nex-Tech brought something new that changed the way I looked at technology and its connection to people’s lives. During my first few weeks, I learned more about Nex-Tech’s fiber network and the importance of reliable connectivity. Fiber is not only about faster internet. It provides the foundation that allows families, schools, healthcare organizations, farms, and businesses to access opportunities and stay connected.

This idea became even clearer when I worked on a precision agriculture project during my internship. Around the world, technology is transforming rural communities, from advanced connectivity solutions to agricultural innovation. This experience reminded me that technology has the power to reduce distances and bring new opportunities to places that need them.

As I continued my journey at Nex-Tech, I discovered many solutions I had never connected with a telecommunications company before, such as security systems, access control, cloud phone systems, managed technology services, cybersecurity, and more. What surprised me most was not simply the technology itself, but how closely these solutions connect with people’s everyday lives. Security solutions are not just cameras and equipment. They help protect schools, businesses, healthcare facilities, and community spaces. Access control is not just a smart way to open a door; it helps organizations create safer environments and protect important areas. Cloud phones are not only communication tools; they help people collaborate and keep businesses operating efficiently. Gradually, I started to realize that behind every piece of technology, there is a real human need.

One of my biggest learning experiences was visiting Nex-Tech’s Salina location. Walking through the building, I saw innovation in a completely different way. I learned about Nex-Tech’s history, creative solutions, and how new technologies are being introduced into everyday environments. One of my favorite moments was interacting with a service robot during our visit. The robot moved around the room and brought drinks to people, almost like a technology-powered assistant. It reminded me of similar robot delivery experiences I had seen in large cities, but seeing this innovation supporting local businesses in Kansas made it even more meaningful. It was exciting and futuristic, but the most important part was not the robot itself. It represented how automation can help people work smarter, improve efficiency, and create better experiences.

Another part of my internship that changed my perspective was working with Nex-Tech’s economic development initiatives, including the Revolving Loan Fund. Before this experience, I thought technology companies mainly supported communities through technical services. However, through learning about local business stories and economic impact, I realized Nex-Tech’s commitment goes beyond technology. Nex-Tech supports small businesses, encourages local growth, and invests in the future of rural Kansas communities. This showed me that innovation is not only about creating advanced technology. It is also about caring about where and how that technology is used.

Recently, my visit to the Network Operations Center in Victoria gave me another perspective. Most people only see the result: the Internet works, the phone connects, and systems operate normally. But behind that simple experience, there are people, processes, and technologies working together every day. Seeing the monitoring systems, equipment, and behind-the-scenes operations helped me understand how teams maintain reliable services and protect the systems communities depend on. It connected directly with what I study in Information Management: successful technology requires not only hardware and software, but also planning, risk management, and people working together.

Now, my understanding of Nex-Tech has grown far beyond my original impression. I came expecting to learn more about fiber, Wi-Fi, and telecommunications, and I did. But along the way, I discovered robotics, cybersecurity, creative solutions, managed services, community development, and most importantly, the people behind the technology.

My biggest lesson is that technology itself is not the destination. Its true value comes from how it helps people solve problems, create opportunities, and build stronger communities. That is what I discovered beyond fiber.

I'm Friday Otuya /Oh-Too-Yah/. I love sharing development resources, working on initiatives that change lives, and building bridges that lead to prosperity.

Specifically, I originate, underwrite, and deploy capital to small businesses that typically don't fit bank credit criteria. These businesses create jobs and expand economic opportunity in Nex-Tech's service area. I also support Nex-Tech's community and legislative strategy toward making life better through technology.

Before this, I worked in broadcast journalism and corporate communications, and did development finance work across Africa and the U.S.

If you are curious how Nex-Tech can partner with you through loans, grants, donations, or another kind of capital investment, I'd love to chat.

I live with my wife and two lads in Hays, KS.
