Embracing New Competition

May 5, 2025

In today’s broadband industry, building community trust and differentiating ourselves from competitors are more critical than ever. During a recent Edge webinar, Lindsay Brinker, Marketing Supervisor at Nex-Tech, shared key strategies to help broadband providers navigate competition, strengthen their brand, and enhance customer loyalty.

Embracing Competition and Enhancing Strengths

Rather than viewing competition as a threat, Lindsay encouraged broadband providers to embrace it and focus on enhancing their existing strengths. Instead of constantly chasing new ideas, she recommended refining and maximizing what already works. By recognizing unique talents and services, providers can create a distinct presence in the market.

Identifying and Evaluating Competition

Understanding the competitive landscape is essential. Lindsay outlined various competitors in the broadband space, including national providers, regional broadband companies, satellite services, and cell providers. These competitors often have large advertising budgets and recognizable brands, making it crucial to assess how they position themselves in the market.

To effectively evaluate competition, Lindsay suggested using AI tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot for SWOT analyses, conducting mystery shopping, reading Google reviews, and leveraging digital tools like Facebook Ads Library. These strategies provide insight into competitors’ strengths, weaknesses, and customer satisfaction levels.

Establishing Brand Awareness and Customer Perception
Lindsay stressed the importance of understanding how customers perceive a brand. Using tools like Net Promoter Score (NPS), customer surveys, and mystery shopping can provide valuable data on customer satisfaction and highlight areas for improvement. Establishing a baseline for brand awareness ensures that marketing strategies are aligned with customer expectations and company goals.

Staying True to Core Values

A company’s core values serve as its foundation. Lindsay emphasized identifying key non-negotiables that define a provider’s commitment to customers. For Nex-Tech, this includes policies like not charging for fiber drops and bundling router installation with Internet service. These consistent practices reinforce trust and reliability within the community.

Addressing “Shiny Toy Syndrome”

New providers entering the market often attract customers simply because they are a new phenomenon, which Lindsay referred to as “Shiny Toy Syndrome.” To counter this, she advised making services “sticky” by offering value-driven features that enhance the customer experience. Tools like user-friendly apps for managing home networks can improve retention by increasing customer reliance on existing services.

The Power of Consistent Messaging and Community Engagement

Maintaining a strong, unified brand message across all platforms is key to recognition and trust. Lindsay shared how Nex-Tech ensures consistency in marketing when entering new markets. Additionally, she highlighted the importance of showcasing community involvement—whether through sponsorships, local events, or social media—to reinforce a company’s investment in the areas it serves.

Emphasizing Uniqueness to Stand Out

Differentiation is essential in a crowded broadband market. Lindsay guided providers through an exercise to identify what sets them apart from competitors. For Nex-Tech, this includes a strong local presence and a commitment to providing uninterrupted service, even during peak events like Chiefs games. Pinpointing and promoting these unique qualities help companies build a strong brand identity.

Bold Marketing and Competitive Pricing Strategies

Taking bold marketing approaches can make a lasting impact. Lindsay shared examples of bold marketing campaigns from various companies, including H&B Communications, WTC in Manhattan, KS, and a Canadian Internet company. She emphasized the importance of being bold and standing out in marketing efforts.

Building Long-Term Success in the Broadband Industry

By embracing competition, reinforcing core values, and actively engaging with the community, broadband providers can establish trust and stand out in the market. As Lindsay Brinker’s insights highlight, success comes from leveraging existing strengths, maintaining brand consistency, and confidently positioning a company as the best choice for customers.
