Exploring the Legacy and Vision of Nex-Tech: My Summer Internship Experience
Written by: Ella Burrows
As part of my internship with Nex-Tech this summer, I’ve had the opportunity to explore the company’s rich history, its innovative present, and its forward-looking vision.
Nex-Tech began in 1951 as Rural Telephone, a cooperative founded to bring essential phone service to underserved areas of northwest Kansas. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the company grew steadily by acquiring local exchanges and modernizing infrastructure, including the transition to dial service and the burial of telephone lines. By the 1980s, Nex-Tech had become a regional pioneer in fiber-optic technology and positioned itself for significant growth following industry deregulation. Under longtime CEO Larry Sevier, the company expanded into cable, internet, and cellular services while continuing to invest heavily in rural broadband infrastructure.
In 1999, the company rebranded as Nex-Tech, reflecting its transformation into a modern telecommunications and technology provider. Over the next two decades, it launched Nex-Tech Wireless, became a competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC), and added managed IT, cloud, and digital advertising services to its offerings. Through strategic acquisitions and major fiber deployments, Nex-Tech brought high-speed internet access to dozens of rural communities. Since Jimmy Todd took over as CEO in 2014, the company has continued to innovate, launching gigabit broadband, web-based TV services, and youth-focused technology education initiatives. Today, Nex-Tech is the largest managed service provider in Kansas between Kansas City and Denver, with more than 20 locations, a 24/7 help desk, and a deep commitment to its cooperative roots.
But Nex-Tech’s impact goes far beyond technology. The company actively invests in rural Kansas through initiatives like the Revolving Loan Fund, which this year has helped businesses like the 1872 Restaurant in Stockton and Birdsall Automotive in Osborne thrive. It supports youth development through organizations such as Nex-Generation Round-Up for Youth, the incredible program that made my internship possible. Nex-Tech also facilitates the Foundation for Rural Service Community Grant Program, helping communities grow and innovate at the local level. These initiatives reflect Nex-Tech’s commitment to the people and places it serves. With continued investment in cutting-edge broadband technologies and strong community partnerships, the future is bright, and I’m proud to be a part of it this summer.
