A Student-Intern’s Perspective on AI Use
Written by: Marley Little
In my project, “How Nex-Tech Harnesses AI: Insights from Award-Winning Professionals,” I learned many valuable lessons as an intern and student.
Students and educators alike know that AI in the classroom is a taboo topic. Many students are curious about AI technology, but are not allowed to use it for coursework or are afraid of being accused of academic dishonesty. As a student, I limited my use of AI, especially in school. When I began research for this presentation, my mindset changed. I had a major realization that I wanted to boldly convey in my presentation at Fort Hays State University:
While college students are being taught about the dangers of AI use, working people are actually taking advantage of it. The hard truth is that students who do not practice using AI in their industry will be left behind as the technology advances. This was supported by the opinions of influential employees at Nex-Tech, whom I interviewed for this project. Unfortunately, many students are not receiving this advice from educators.
In my presentation, I included a section with advice from Nex-Tech professionals for students. There was an obvious common theme. Employers will be looking for entry-level workers who have practiced with AI and bring curiosity, creativity, and knowledge to the table. In this day and age, experience is just as important as education when searching for a job.
Since completing this project, I’ve been applying the advice from those I interviewed and practicing with AI. I was also pleased to continue the growth of my skills in public speaking, Microsoft applications, and communication.
