My First Week at Nex-Tech

I’m glad to officially begin my summer internship at Nex-Tech. Now that I have finished my first week, I can say that I learned much more than I expected in just a few days.

My week began with onboarding and introductions to the team. With the help of Brenna and Aidan, I completed new employee training and learned workplace procedures. I became familiar with the tools we use every day, including Basecamp, Yak, Knack, and Microsoft Teams. Basecamp helps our team manage projects and tasks. Yak is Nex-Tech’s internal platform, and Knack helps organize project information and community data. By using these systems and reviewing previous projects, I started to understand how different departments work together to support local communities. Everyone was welcoming and willing to answer questions, which made the transition into a professional work environment much easier.

Before starting this internship, I mostly thought of Nex-Tech as a company that provides fiber internet services. After spending time with the team, I learned that Nex-Tech does much more than that. The company not only expands broadband access across rural Kansas but also supports local businesses, community organizations, schools, and economic development programs. Learning about these efforts helped me see how Nex-Tech plays an important role in supporting rural communities throughout the state.

During my first week, I learned more about the wide range of services and programs offered by Nex-Tech. In addition to fiber internet, the company provides technology solutions for homes and businesses, supports schools, healthcare organizations, and local governments, and invests in community development initiatives across Kansas. I also spent time reviewing company materials, service maps, and expansion projects, which helped me better understand the scale of Nex-Tech’s impact. I was especially interested in learning how Nex-Tech combines technology, education, and economic development to help rural communities grow, stay connected, and create new opportunities for the future.

A large part of my first week was spent learning about the Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) and other programs supported by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). These programs help small business owners access funding, create jobs, and invest in their communities. I reviewed several successful projects and watched stories from business owners who benefited from these programs. Their experiences helped me understand the real impact these programs can have on rural communities.

I also learned more about Nex-Tech’s fiber broadband expansion across Kansas. Looking at the company’s service maps and expansion projects helped me see how technology can support business growth, education, healthcare, and daily life in rural areas. This gave me a better understanding of how broadband and economic development are connected.

Another valuable lesson came from workplace communication. We mainly use Microsoft Teams to communicate throughout the day.

Friday explained that at Nex-Tech, we aim for professional communication that is clear, respectful, and direct. I also learned that different people have different communication styles, and understanding those differences can help teams work more efficiently.

My first week gave me a strong foundation for the rest of my internship.

I am grateful for the support I have received so far, and I look forward to learning more about Nex-Tech, meeting more people across the company, and contributing to projects that support communities throughout Kansas.
