“Cool” Lakes to Visit in NW Kansas this Summer
Written by: Ella Burrows
For many families across our service footprint, the summer season means a time to travel, unwind, relax, and make lasting memories. The high plains region of northwest Kansas remains a hidden gem that offers many enjoyable natural beauties. The good news is you wouldn’t even miss out on your reliable Nex-Tech Wireless mobile connection when you visit these. Check them out!
1. Keith Sebelius Lake – Located near Norton, this reservoir is surrounded by Prairie Dog State Park and the Norton Wildlife Area. It’s a favorite for fishing (saugeye, wipers, bass, and catfish), boating, and camping. The lake also supports waterfowl hunting and offers scenic wildlife viewing opportunities.
2. Waconda Lake – Waconda Lake is one of the largest lakes in Kansas. Located near Cawker City and Glen Elder, it offers excellent fishing, boating, and camping. Glen Elder State Park, located on the north shore, is a hub for outdoor fun and family-friendly events.
3. Kirwin Reservoir – Nestled in Phillips County, Kirwin Reservoir is part of the Kirwin National Wildlife Refuge. It’s a haven for birdwatchers and anglers alike, with species like crappie, walleye, and catfish. The area is also rich in hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities. Nex-Tech recently expanded fiber to the Kirwin area, and that has made it even better!
4. Webster Lake – Located near Stockton, this 3,700-acre reservoir is surrounded by rolling prairie and the scenic Chalk Hills. Webster State Park offers camping, disc golf, hiking, and excellent fishing for walleye, crappie, and catfish. It’s also a key stop for migratory birds. Nex-Tech has some free Internet hotspots around this lake, so keep an eye out for these when you visit.
5. Cedar Bluff Reservoir – This lake is known for its dramatic limestone bluffs and two distinct park areas: Bluffton (developed) and Page Creek (more primitive). It’s perfect for boating, fishing, hiking, and even BMX biking or volleyball. I spent a day here last summer and it was unforgettable!
6. Plainville Township Lake – A smaller, 122-acre lake near Plainville, this spot is ideal for a quiet day of fishing, birdwatching, or disc golf. It offers camping with electrical hookups and is a great local getaway for families and nature lovers.
7. Wilson Lake – Often called the most beautiful lake in Kansas, Wilson Lake features clear blue water, rugged cliffs, and scenic trails. Located in the Smoky Hills region, it’s a hotspot for striper fishing, kayaking, and hiking. Wilson State Park is a must-visit. I just returned from a visit to this paradise, and it was simply blissful!
