From the Classroom to a Career

The Nex-Generation Student Internship Program offers area youth with paid, summer internships with a variety of local and area businesses and organizations.  Our interns gain instructive and hands-on experiences in a variety of technical and non-technical fields as they work alongside skilled professionals.  Upon completion of the program, students will have gained valuable training that will help with their transition from the classroom to a local career.
 

Eligibility

Must be a high school or college student, age 16 or over, who is from or attending school in one of the following 30 counties:  Barton, Cheyenne, Cloud, Decatur, Ellis, Ellsworth, Gove, Graham, Jewell, Lane, Lincoln, Logan, McPherson, Mitchell, Norton, Osborne, Ottawa, Phillips, Rawlins, Republic, Rooks, Rush, Russell, Saline, Sheridan, Sherman, Smith, Thomas, Trego, and Wallace.

Position Description:  Our intern will learn about dental healthcare by assisting office staff with administrative duties, including greeting patients both in person and by phone and filing charts. He or she will also become familiar with sterilization techniques and other requirements of the dental industry.
 

Location:  Scandia, KS (Republic County)
Position Description:  An intern with C & C will experience a variety of hands-on work in agriculture. He or she will assist in grading and packaging produce for shipment; selling produce at both the Farmer’s Market and C & C’s new store location; and making deliveries. In addition, he or she will have opportunities to do field work, such as weeding and pruning; harvesting; record keeping of daily harvest amounts; and customer communication through weekly newsletters.

Position Description:  CertainTeed Corporation is seeking a college student who is looking to gain practical project experience relative to his or her Engineering degree field. Project examples could be related to injection molding machine presses, robotics, conveyor systems, printing systems, cost reduction projects, and more.

Position Description:  We are seeking a student interested in doing a variety of work, from social media and marketing to administrative support. Our intern will work with local/area businesses, updating information to put on websites; travel to meetings for tourism, chamber, and economic development, as well as city, county, and legislative purposes. He or she will have a perfect setting to explore what is happening in other Kansas communities and meet others in those industries. While in the office, the intern can expect to work on and distribute brochures within the county, answer calls, and greet customers.

Position Description:  The City of Bird City is seeking an intern to assist in city maintenance, including streets, parks, city facilities, and recycling center services in Bird City. He or she will be required to do manual labor, work in varying weather conditions, and work with chemicals. Student must be age 16 or over to apply.

Position Description:  We are seeking an accounting student with excellent attention to details to work on a capital asset management program for the City of Russell. The intern will be responsible for visiting each department and gathering and logging equipment, capital assets, and related information into a spreadsheet database, as well as taking pictures of all equipment and capital assets.

The job will include, but not be limited to, working with our technicians to install and troubleshoot a variety of communications services across our North Central Kansas footprint. He or she must hold a valid driver’s license, pass pre-employment or random drug and alcohol testing, and be willing to provide excellent customer service.

The app would contain information about the museum (hours of operation, map of location, and a video of the museum’s fifteen buildings), and information about off-road driving tours, including the Last Indian Raid in Kansas and the Great Western Cattle Trail that passed through the county.

Location:  LaCrosse, KS (Rush County)
Position Description:  At EJ Livestock, our intern will have an opportunity to work in an agricultural setting in Rush and Ness counties. As a diversified family farm/livestock operation, we raise show cattle, hogs, and goats. We largely focus on our commercial cows as recipients for embryo transfer. Our intern will experience all aspects, from farm to fork, as we synchronize the cows; raise, finish, and market the offspring; and then follow them through to harvest at the local locker. He or she will receive first-hand experience in machinery maintenance, basic welding, haying, vaccinating, nutrition, fencing, and more. Applicants for this position should be able to drive from pasture to pasture and should expect to dive in and get dirty.

Position Description:  Our intern will assist non-clinical departments or non-clinical areas of the medical center, including compiling materials, filing, sorting, organizing, etc. This will be an excellent position for a student interested in expanding his or her business and office skills, while learning the business of a rural hospital and medical facility.

Position Description:  We are excited to offer an intern an opportunity to explore basic plumbing repair services, such as fixing leaks, cleaning drains, replacing faucets, and setting water closets. The student will learn and stock inventory and may learn to clean sewers and perform other tasks as needed.

Position Description:  We have an amazing, construction project that will require up to 3 interns working as a team to design and build façades and renovate building interior for a lifelike “town” in the former Lenora High School building. The team will see the project through from start to finish. Candidates should love hands-on work, excel at woodworking, and have an artistic flare. They must have experience operating woodworking equipment and tools. Experience with drafting, woodworking, or architectural design is a must. Position Description:  Our intern will assist with projects throughout the summer. He or she will rotate through all seven positions within the library to learn the in’s and out’s of the library setting. The candidate can expect to travel extensively to the libraries we serve, assisting them in projects such as shelf moving, weeding, automation, and more. Position Description:  The selected intern will have hands-on experience in the many departments at Norton County Hospital. Departments could include nursing, family practice (shadowing medical staff), rehabilitation, radiology, lab, purchasing, health information management, infection prevention, foundation, human resources, information technology, and many more. The intern will rotate through the various departments during the summer, with the most time focused on his or her interest areas in healthcare. At the end of the internship, the goal is for this person to have a greater understanding of the breadth of knowledge and experience required to operate a rural, critical-access hospital and medical clinic, and this understanding would further develop this person for any career he or she chooses in the future.

Our intern will gain hands-on experience with agronomic services, including field checkups. The intern will also help implement a new product for obtaining information on our growers’ fields during the corn-growing season. Student must be able to operate an ATV and possess a clean driving record with a current, valid driver’s license.

Our Intern will learn a variety of hands-on skills in the banking industry, including cash handling; balancing a teller drawer; customer service skills; and sales. In addition, he or she will develop interpersonal relations with different departments and lines of business within the bank, such as loans, treasury management, upper management, and mortgages.

Position Description:  Our intern will primarily serve as a teller, but will also gain exposure to all the aspects of banking. As a teller, he or she can expect to learn how to balance a cash drawer on a daily basis and about all of the required transactions associated with a customer’s deposit, withdrawal, or loan payment. He or she will also assist operations by stuffing statements, handling mail, and engaging in a variety of other projects.

Position Description:  Theraplay Learning Center is a clinic that provides Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy services to children (0 to 21 years of age). We are seeking a student to assist with preparations and cleanup of activities with children. Our intern will assist with transitions of children in and out of the clinic, help with back-office tasks, such as filing, organizing, laminating, and making visuals.

Position Description:  Our intern will become an essential part of the Thomas County Attorney’s office. He or she will participate in preparing cases to be filed, interacting with law enforcement, attending court, answering the phone, and performing other office tasks. The student intern will work in a hands-on role. This is a great opportunity for a student interested in further developing leadership, management, creativity, and project skills.

Position Description:  USD 298 Lincoln is looking for a student interested in working in an office environment. Our intern will receive visitors at the front desk by greeting, welcoming, directing, and announcing them appropriately; answer, screen, and forward incoming phone calls; receive and sort daily mail; update calendars; and schedule meetings. He or she will also work with spreadsheets and other databases to transfer data from paper formats into computer files or database systems. The candidate should be excellent at using the keyboard and creating spreadsheets with large numbers of figures without mistakes. He or she will be responsible for verifying data by comparing it to source documents and updating existing data, such as inventory.

Position Description:  We are seeking an intern to help with either outdoor maintenance or inside administrative/office work (or both). An intern hired for outdoor maintenance will help maintain the 7-acre park where our campers stay. He or she will mow lawns, operate a weed eater, fix broken water pipes, clean the pool, maintain picnic tables, and plant flowers. He or she may also assist in new projects we have planned for the summer, such as fencing, sprinkler systems, dog parks, and new playground. An intern hired for inside administrative/office work will interact with our guests by talking with them in the store; taking reservations over the phone; registering guests once they arrive; taking them to their campsite; serving them ice cream; and helping them with connection to or questions about WiFi and Cable TV.

Position Description:  We are seeking a student interested in learning about retail sales in a small, boutique setting. He or she will also assist us in the launch of online sales. This position is funded through Nex-Generation’s partnership with Phillips County Economic Development.
